Champagne Alain Suisse

Cumières, in the Vallée de la Marne, this, ladies and gentleman, is Champagne country. This is where we visited Alain Suisse, fourth generation winemaker. Someone who passionate about what he does and infects you with that same passion and as someone famous once said: people with passion can change the world.

We got a little tour and visited the cave, which dates back to around 1830. Having never visited a cave filled with before, this was quite exciting. Rows and rows filled with Champagne, stacked high and where ever theres was a nook, it was filled with bottles. Could it get any better?

Yes. After the cave, it was time to open the bottles and have a little taste. It was interesting as we discussed the new wine drinking. Has the game changed? Where we used to drink Champagne at celebrations; birthdays, weddings, events – are we consuming Champagne now on a regular weekday? If not – we definitely should!
It’s the same with drinking rosé off season.

As the Champagne tasting and hours passed, more bottles were opened and enjoyed. Some sublime Champagnes are made by this vigneron indépendant. A personal favourite was Cuvée 381, of which ‘381’ refers to the house number. Something off the menu was also consumed – Alain’s ‘hobby project’ Pinot Noir. Three vintages of Pinot Noir blended and aged and not for sale. As a Pinot Noir fangirl, it couldn’t get any better.

It was an amazing visit and we learned a lot from this exceptional wine maker. We would like to thank the Suisse family for the warm hospitality and generosity.
