Pinotage. Virtual high five.

Yesterday we tasted Pinot Noirs for the WSET2 level. Also on the list was Pinotage.
As I don’t know a lot about Pinotage (say what?), I quickly learned the worst and the best in the Pinotage spectrum.

Now, if you don’t know anything about this grape either: Pinotage is a grape variety that was created in South Africa in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold, the first Professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University. It was bred there in 1925 as a cross between Pinot noir and Cinsaut. It is a red wine grape that is South Africa’s signature variety.

Ok, so if you didn’t know anything, at least now you know already more than I did before tasting Pinotage. Yes, as you might have noticed, I am also ignoring the first Pinotage we tasted, as I only can find words to describe this such as: tennisballs and chemicals to describe the nose. And taste.

Why? Because I want to move on to this:

With a nose of appealing dark red fruits and tobacco, this well balanced wine is soft, high in tannins, but yet elegant, some complexity, full bodied and I can go on on on…

Virtual high five, Abrie Beeslaar!
