White wine…

After the wait, which seemed forever, I had my first night of the beginners wine class, SDEN1. This first night focused on whites and rose. Not my favorites. Unless it’s champagne.

And being brutally honest, out of the 10 wines I tasted, there was only one I liked. Two if I count the Prosecco in the beginning.

But I will put in my best effort and taste and drink more of these, I do want to know better what I am drinking and tasting. Taste is subjective. So how can I spot a ‘bad’ wine, if I leave personal taste out of the equation? What makes a wine ‘technically’ well structured? Another one: Tannin. I understand the concept, but can’t define it. Then smelling of the wine: quite stressful. Can’t quite seem to recognize what the bouquet is.

Ah.Luxury problems. It’s all learning and tasting, and drinking more.

List of wines tasted:

Prosecco Ray Brut,  Italy     €9,95

I like!

Riesling Dokter Loosen, 2011, Germany    €12,95

this gave me tears. but they weren’t tears of joy.

Goldwater Estate,  Sauvignon Blanc 2015, NZ    €9,95

oh dear.

Markowitsch,  Chardonnay 2015, Austria    €9,95

Goosebumps. but not in a good way.

Francis Ford Coppola, Chardonnay Diamond collection, 2014, USA    €14,95

It’s okay, nice smell and aroma, but I favor the movies.

Sodevo, Pinot Grigio 2014, Italy    €9,95

…No

Pfaffenheim, Pfaff Pinot Blanc 2015, France    €6,50

Nope. But wait for it…

Domaine de Dionysos, Viognier 2015, France    €8,95

No. Not my thing.

Pfaffenheim, Pfaff Gewürztraminer 2014, France    €9,95

Here it is! Another reason why I love France and it’s wine.

Montrose, rose 2015 magnum, France    €13,95

I don’t yet get rose. I just don’t. Yet.

Comfort zone

It’s no secret that I favor French red wines. One of the reasons I am doing this, is to get out of my comfort zone. Live on the edge. Do something different. However after having tasted all the wines in the above list, the result I thought was surprising. or wasn’t it? Of course it had to be a French white that was the winner in my view. The wine I am referring to is the Pfaff Gewürztraminer 2014. I loved that one. It had a nice smell and aroma and if it wasn’t wine I would have showered in it because it smelled so nice.

So how is it possible that I picked a Frenchy? Is it maybe not random, or am I accustomed to the taste and on a sub conscious level I recognize some elements? Interesting thought on which I will follow up on.

Next week

Up next week is my favorite subject: red wines. Yay!  In the meantime I will go ahead and buy myself some whites… it’s a learning curve, right?!
